YORUBA LANGUAGE AS A FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION
One of the important priorities of the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba (D.R.Y.) is the preservation, promotion, and advancement of the Yoruba language, culture, and identity for present and future generations.
Language is more than communication. It represents identity, heritage, values, wisdom, and the foundation of a people’s civilisation. For centuries, the Yoruba people have maintained a rich cultural and linguistic heritage that must be preserved and strengthened.
Yoruba Language in Education
The Democratic Republic of the Yoruba (D.R.Y.) envisions an educational system where the Yoruba language becomes a major language of instruction in schools, particularly in foundational and early education.
Research across the world has shown that children often learn faster and understand concepts better when taught in their native language during their formative years. A culturally rooted education system can strengthen confidence, improve comprehension, and preserve indigenous knowledge.
In D.R.Y., emphasis will be placed on:
The teaching and preservation of Yoruba language
Yoruba history, values, and cultural identity
Moral character and responsible citizenship
Educational systems rooted in Yoruba heritage while engaging with global knowledge
At the same time, D.R.Y. recognises the importance of preparing future generations for global engagement, international education, diplomacy, technology, commerce, and innovation.
For this reason, while Yoruba language and culture will remain central to identity and education, students will also be encouraged to acquire additional languages and global skills necessary for international competitiveness and development.
Returning to Our Roots
The future of a people depends on their ability to preserve their identity while embracing progress.
As parents, elders, teachers, and community leaders, we all have a responsibility to encourage younger generations to speak Yoruba, understand our traditions, and appreciate the richness of our heritage.
A people who preserve their language preserve their future.
May Olódùmarè continue to guide the Yoruba people.
KẸ́RẸ́ OOO!
ÀWỌN ỌMỌ YORÙBÁ… Ẹ DÌDE!
God Bless the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba (D.R.Y.)
